Why irrigation water spots etch paint in St. Augustine

The lawn looks fine. The hood does not. Irrigation overspray dries in Florida sun and etches mineral rings into paint and glass.

Drive through Nocatee, Palencia, or any new St. Johns subdivision at 6 a.m. and the sprinklers are already running. Well water and reclaimed water carry calcium, magnesium, and iron. The mist that misses the grass lands on the hood, roof, and windshield. By noon the Florida sun has baked it. Those rings are not dirt. They are minerals sitting in the clear coat.

Why do sprinklers etch paint in St. Augustine?

A fresh spot is a droplet of hard water. Leave it and the water evaporates. The minerals stay. Heat pulls them into the top of the clear coat, which is why a white ring on a black car will not come off with a hose the next day. Iron in well water adds the brown edge. Salt air on Anastasia Island and St. Augustine Beach makes the same panel worse — chloride plus minerals etch faster than either one alone. Glass gets the cloudy windshield. Paint gets the dull hood you only notice in afternoon sun.

Can you wipe irrigation spots off, or are they already etched?

If the car was misted this morning and the panel is still cool, a proper wash and a dry microfiber will lift most of it. If the spots have sat through a hot day, wiping harder only drags minerals across the paint. That is how a water spot becomes a swirl. Light etching comes out with a water-spot correction. Deep rings need a polish on that panel before any sealant or coating goes on. A tunnel wash will not fix either one. Recycled water just adds another mineral film.

How to stop sprinkler spots on a driveway car

Park out of the spray, or move the head that hits the driveway. If the car got wet, rinse with fresh water and dry it before the sun is high — do not let irrigation water air-dry. A sealant or ceramic layer does not make the car immune. It gives you more time to rinse before the minerals bite. On a daily driver that lives under sprinklers, that layer is the difference between a wipe-off and a correction every month.

What we do when the spots are already in the clear coat

Water spot correction starts at $40 when the etching is light and local. Heavier mineral damage is a polish, then protection. The Ceramic package is the seven-year coat, from $499, after we see the paint. Studio and Atelier still cover sealant and ceramic spray if you want months of protection without a full coating day.
